Undergraduate Internship

Secure Base Counseling Center is looking for interns! Students who are enrolled in an accredited Bachelor’s program may be qualified to participate in our internship program. 

Introduction

Our Bachelor’s level internship provides an opportunity for entry-level training in the treatment of children and adults with complex mental health diagnoses. Interns will train to be a part of our rehabilitative mental health programs: Children’s Therapeutic Support Services (CTSS) and Adult Rehabilitative Mental Health Services (ARMHS). We provide a collaborative environment where interns are able to learn from their peers and therapists as they develop their skills in mental health care. Interns will have face to face client contact with support from Mental Health Practitioners. This internship prepares students to work independently in the field.

Location

This position could be located in any of Secure Base Counseling Center’s locations:

  • Office locations are in Northfield, New Prague, and Farmington. Interns choose a “home” office. 
  • The client contact work is based in clients’ homes and/or in the community. 
  • Some training and tasks can be done remotely

Eligibility 

    • Student is currently enrolled in an undergraduate behavioral science program (e.g. social work, psychology, sociology, community counseling, family social science, child development, child psychology, community mental health, addiction counseling, counseling and guidance, special education, nursing, etc.) and is eligible to receive an internship credit through their school
    • Student is in good academic standing
    • Student must have access to a vehicle and valid driver’s license

Internship Details

  • 8-12 weeks
  • A minimum of 45 hours required, but the number of weekly hours may vary depending on the number of credits the student is taking towards their internship and other factors
  • Flexible scheduling with some remote work and some in person
  • Some afternoons and evenings required for client shadowing

Career Advancement 

  • Completing an internship and 30 hours of coursework in the field as an undergraduate student qualifies you to work as a Mental Health Practitioner 
  • Upon completion of your internship at Secure Base Counseling Center (SBCC), you will receive a certificate of completion
  • Mental Health Practitioner positions at SBCC pays $20-25 per contact hour
  • We encourage interns to apply for employment at SBCC

Responsibilities

  • Receive approximately 30 hours of training in the areas of recovery and resilience, mental illness, attachment, de-escalation, child development, trauma-informed care, culturally responsive treatment, and person/family centered treatment practices
  • Weekly group supervision (via Google Meet)
  • Shadow CTSS and ARMHS individual client sessions
  • Shadow CTSS and ARMHS skills group
  • Shadow therapy sessions, if applicable
  • Shadow support staff at the front desk to understand other elements of the agency
  • Attend an all-staff meeting, if applicable
  • Some interns will build and maintain their own caseload of CTSS and ARMHS clients.
  • Other opportunities for growth and learning

Freedom to Act

Employee is generally free to organize and prioritize own job duties, as well as assignments to other support staff, and knows where to refer people for assistance or guidance when necessary – or appropriately follows up to acquire a resolution. Employee works independently and with minimum supervision in carrying out necessary tasks. Employee is able to make decisions and answer questions using written resources such as the Employee Handbook, policy and other resources. In the rare event the Clinical Administrator is not available and the need is urgent, direct contact with the Clinical Director may be sought.
