Healing Trauma
“Trauma is not what happens to you but what happens inside you” ― Gabor Maté
Trauma can mean many different things and present in many different ways. All of our therapists at Secure Base Counseling Center practice from a trauma-informed perspective. This can include a variety of types of therapy, including (but not limited to):
- EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing)
- Somatic therapies
- Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy
- Polyvagal theory
- Narrative therapy
At Secure Base Counseling Center, we offer on-going training to therapists to support them in their development of providing trauma-informed care.
Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) : Negative experiences in childhood can put us at risk for adverse effects in adulthood according to research. If you have experienced any of the following ACEs, you may benefit from trauma based therapy:
- Physical abuse
- Sexual abuse
- Emotional abuse
- Physical neglect
- Emotional neglect
- Family member or caretaker mental illness
- Family member or caretaker substance abuse
- Witnessing violence
- Having a relative sent to jail or prison
- Losing a parent due to separation, divorce, or death
LGBTQI+ individuals and people of color are at risk of experiencing discrimination, harassment, or racial trauma. This can come in the form of hate crimes, discriminatory laws and policies, family rejection, religious rejection, and microaggressions. At SBCC, we actively work to build awareness of the impacts of discrimination and intersectionality. We strive to create a safe place for clients to process this trauma.
Protective factors: Creating and sustaining safe, stable, nurturing relationships and environments for all children and adults is one important way that we protect and heal.
At Secure Base Counseling Center, we believe that clients can heal through relationships, whether that means within the therapeutic relationship or offering support with building and maintaining other important relationships.
