What Is Narcan?

WHAT IS NALOXONE (NARCAN)?

Naloxone is a medication that can reverse the effects of opioid overdose.

WHEN TO GIVE NARCAN

Administer when someone does not wake up to their name or painful stimulation, has slow or no breathing, small pupils, or has strange breath sounds.

If you suspect that someone is experiencing an opioid overdose, seek medical attention immediately.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR ADMINISTRATION

Injection Pen:

Open Naloxone by removing the cap from the vial, insert needle into the vial, and withdraw 1 mL of Naloxone. Inject the needle into the outer muscle of the upper arm.

 

Nasal Spray:

Remove yellow caps from the end of the applicator and twist the nasal adapter onto the tip of the applicator until it is tightly secured. Take the purple cap off of the naloxone syringe, insert into the other side of the applicator, and twist until tight. Push half of the naloxone dose (about 1 ml) into EACH nostril. You should give 2 mL total. 

 

After administration stay with the person and provide CPR and/or rescue breaths if needed.

Did You Know?

Minnesota State Statute 604.A.04 and 604A.05 protects you from criminal prosecution when attempting to help someone suffering from an opioici overdose.

ANYONE CAN GIVE NARCAN – Statute 604A.04 Subd. 2. (a) A person who is not a healthcare professional may possess or administer an opiate antagonist that is prescribed, dispensed, or distributed by a licensed healthcare professional pursuant to subdivision 3.

IF YOU HELP SOMEONE WHILE UNDER THE INFLUENCE YOU CANNOT BE CHARGED – Statute 604A.05 Subd. 1 A person acting in good faith who seeks medical assistance for anther person who is experiencing a drug-related overdose may not be charged or prosecuted for the possesion, sharing, or use of a controlled substance
